Wheels for April 1
by John Kanelis

Ove Johansson calls himself the "Poster child for the American Dream." Indeed, he speaks with great passion about his home country, which isn't the country of his birth, but which he has adopted with all the gusto he can muster. Ove regaled us with tales of his adventure to the United States about 35 years ago, how he applied his soccer skills into a successful college football stint at Abilene Christian University and how he kicked 70-yard field goals -- even through the tricky West Texas wind. Ove "fell in love immediately" with the United States, and from the sound of it, his love affair is proceeding unabated all these years later. Thanks, Ove, for spreading some of the love to us.

District Governor Jim Cole has offered his top 10 reasons to register for the Tejas Multi-District conference in San Antonio:

10: Fun, hey it's in San Antonio.

9: Opportunities for growth. 8. Networking of Rotarians from six districts. 7. Family fun and adventure at Morgan's Adventureland. 6. The River Walk. 5. World class speakers heard nowhere else. 4. Fellowship with new and old friends. 3. Incredible food and memories of a lifetime. 2. Attending the first multi-district conference. 1. Hey, it's San Antonio -- yes, the first and 10th reasons begin with "fun."   The conference runs from April 29 until May 2. To register, go to www.tejasrotaryconference.org. Friendly reminder: Edit your profiles on Club Runner. A formal pictorial directory will be printed. Deadline for getting photo and information for the directory is today (April 5).Go to www.clubrunner.ca/amarillo and follow the links to the profile page. The Rotary Foundation drawing is getting serious, ladies and gents. PDG Paige Carruth drew the lucky ticket, but didn't get the Ace of Spades. As President Hicks tells us, the deck is getting mighty sparse. The Ace is in there somewhere. Whoever draws the right ticket, and then draws the big card, walks away with half of what's in the pot, which is now nearly $2,000. What's more important is that the money helps fund the Rotary International Foundation's great work around the world. Our April birthday members are as follows: George Cason, April 5; Robert Lindsey, April 6; Robert Forrester, April 9; Dick Marcear, April 13; Coleman Taylor, April 25; and Larry Offerdahl, April 27. And David O'Dell and his wife, Amelia, are celebrating their wedding anniversary on April 6. Congratulations to you all! You'll get this message in time to attend tonight's GSE get together. Our Thai visitors are here one more day before shoving off Tuesday morning for Dumas. Meet the outstanding Group Study Exchange team from District 3360 in Thailand, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Virgil Patterson Auditorium, Happy State Bank Bldg., 701 S. Taylor St.
